Osama Hamdy, MD, PhD, describes the classifications for diabetes from nearly 40 years ago in juxtaposition to the more phenotype-based current categories.
Noting their enhancement of a more precise management of patients, Dr Hamdy describes the components of "clusters" that allow for a more accurate sorting of patients and, hence, more sensitive therapeutics. The exploration of possible genetic factors as well as support of prognostic determinations and efforts at prevention are additional advantages of these more nuanced distinctions.
