Mark Socinski, MD, describes the rise of a new dedication toward the diagnosis and treatment of early-stage non–small cell lung cancer.
Recalling an era early in his career, Dr Socinski details the prevalent mode of surgical practice before proper preoperative and intraoperative staging of the mediastinal lymph nodes was standard practice.
The intervening years have seen a new approach marked by the development of a surgical subspecialty more attuned to the needs of patients with lung cancer and a heightened regard for testing of mediastinal lymph nodes, permitting more accurate staging of disease and concomitant therapeutic efficacy.
