Kristin A. Higgins, MD, offers advice to early-career oncologists in emphasizing that early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a multidisciplinary disease. Dr Higgins considers the range of opinions that inform management decisions such as suitability for surgical resection or determining whether the patient is a candidate for a clinical trial.

Dr Higgins wants young oncologists to also think in terms of the big picture in understanding what they want to achieve in the treatment of patients with early-stage NSCLC over the course of a long career. In acknowledging that oncology can be a challenging field of practice, Dr Higgins also emphasizes the notion of self-care.
